Talking about coal mines, Mataura
22 Mar 2010 19:00

The Lower Mataura Landcare Group invites you to a screening of ‘Coal Country’ documentary followed by discussion.
The film is a short version of Coal Country (about 25 minutes) of their 3 hour documentary from the Sierra Club. It is about mountain top mining in Appalachia, USA. There are some differences there from here, but there are many similarities as well with Solid Energy's plans to build a coal to urea plant, along with a synthetic fuel plant, in Mataura Valley. We merely want to bring home the realities of large scale mining and its effects on the community and possible cost to the country. The consequences of the proposal to mine perhaps 4 or 6 million tonnes will be huge, and social and environmental effects significant. We hope to open a public discussion.
The Mataura Community Centre is easy to find: turn off State Highway 1 onto Bridge Street, the hall is just to the left immediately after you cross the railway.
Entry by gold coin donation.
Location / Venue:
Mataura Community Centre, Mataura
