Garden Make-overs

Hi Transition Town Opotiki Coast,

Last Thurs at Green Drinks lots of ideas were bounced around, and plans formed.  We have collectively got heaps of enthusiasm for the garden make-over project, and quite a bit of momentum too.

Lets use this forum as a way to plan the details, in that way the discussions generated will not be emailed to everyone on our Googlegroups list (more than 50 of us!).

So here is the status so far; We have flyers printed, and a contact person.  We have quite a few enthusiastic people willing to lend a hand, and some experienced gardeners to help provide some guidance.

Plans were made to either deliver flyers to letterboxes on Ford and Goring St, or hand deliver them to people living in the same area who are known to be in need of gardening help.

We have a few tools in the library at Central Service Centre (including the rotary hoe!), and I have a small trailer I’m happy to lend out whenever.  We also have $355 of funds raised to go towards the project, and REAP will pay for photocopying.

So what we don’t have is the details, when to start? Who exactly can make what day? How many families at once? How do we arrange the date?  What shall we spend the money on?  How far will that funding stretch?

Do we need to interview the families first to get a sort of written checklist of needs and assets? Might be useful for REAP as they need an assessment by us to show their photocopy money is being used productively.

What contribution do each of the recipients need to make?  What ongoing support can we offer?  What about compost, worms, bokashi?

Should we start sowing seeds? Etc, etc.

Or should we flag the planning and just start?

If you have ideas or are interested in being part of this topic discussion, go directly to the forum http://www.transitiontowns.org.nz/forum/120 and let’s see what develops.  You don’t have to be part of the hands-on team to contribute!

Cheers,

Kazel

Forum Located

Hello,  I am pleased to announce that I have located this forum and registered so I feel I am now truly participating :).

I am of the opinion that we should just get in there and get started.  We can lose time and interest worrying about all the planning.  This goes against my nature, as I am a planner, however I have watched many initiatives faze out only because the group has gotten caught up 'Sweating the small stuff'.

There is a risk, as identified the other night, 1) of getting more response then we can manage; 2) not having enough money; 3) helping someone that doesn't keep up with the project; but if we wait to get a checklist among other things, it could be weeks before any true activity is achieved.  I think these matters are best addressed as we go along.

As identified I am ready to get stuck in now... and as I type this Kazel the STAR has just delivered the flyers to me... so... I will deliver them in the area from the corner of Stewart & Richard to the corner of Richard & Buchannan to the corner of Buchannan & Church to the corner of Church & Stewart.  This will include Travis Place, off Stewart St.

One of my goals that I want to achieve through this initiative is to get some seedlings started to donate to locals to help get good produce from their gardens.  If we have any contacts that can assist us by donating these type of things for our project, this would be a very positive step to getting the gardens flourishing...

I have confirmation from one neighbor to join me, I just need 2 more, which is why I am putting our flyers in the area I have identified as I live on Ford st, near Stewart st.

By the way....WHAT IS UP WITH NO SPELL CHECK????  HAHA

Getting on with it!

In the spirit of just getting started, Kazna and I sat down yesterday and ordered seeds from Kings Catalogue for the make-overs.  I ordered about $40 of carrot, broccoli, cabbage, sweetcorn, beans.  The basics.  We also ordered a whole bunch of stuff with our own money of more interesting varieties for our own gardens, and will hopefully have surplus seedlings for exchange later in the season.

I worked in a garden nursery once in Taranaki (Bell Block Garden Centre) that used soil as a seed-raising medium.  I think they sterilised it by piling it in great sausages and covering with a tarp for a couple of years.  Was a brilliant system, less transplant shock etc.  They used citrus fertiliser, what organic alternatives are there?  If we are raising seeds, what do permaculture methods suggest?  Otherwise  we'll just go ahead and buy a bag of seed-raising mix, ugh.
