Vision for 2020

Business Processes and systems.

A strong education system is in place around sustainable business.

Clusters of businesses exist with mutual support.

These clusters utilize the by products of neighbouring businesses. (There is no waste).

There is a widespread and established system to enable financing of alternative energy systems that feed back into the grid.

Our local resources which are plentiful are maximised in terms of added value.

We value and use our own local products.

Nelsons creative energy has been used to create “value added” products, utilising our strong primary production base.

Land use to support this is carefully protected.

Financial Systems

There is a strong Green Dollar or alternative currency.

Money spent here stays here.

There are cooperative business structures where profit is not the prime driver. Alternative drivers such as Social Development are important.

Ethical issues feature strongly in business decisions.

There is no eftpos.

Marketing

Marketing concentrates on products that have long life cycles and are appropriate for sustainable living.

Things such as Transport services are promoted rather than individual car ownership.

There is limited packaging. What there is is recyclable.

Markets promote local goods and these are valued by consumers.

People

“Informed consumerism” is widespread with the preference being local goods and sustainable products.

People have change away from buying for buying’s sake and buy products for life.

There are more people and the market is bigger (both positive and negative consequences)

The community has a say in what business development occurs.

The benefit to the people is the driver not profit.

Other

Many different businesses flourish.

There is less international tourism and carbon related activity.

Existing Groups

Credit Unions, Building Society, EDA, Chamber of Commerce, Cawthron, MNIT, Trade and Enterprise, Sustainable Business Network, Employers and Manufacturers assn, Primary Producer groups and orgs, Green Dollar, Nelson Tasman Business Trust, Other.......

Needs and Gaps and Key Process

To ensure land use is protected for key industries.

Limit carbon use and develop businesses that meet the need to provide a transport service.

There is a need for Local Government – regulatory support for new system of sustainable living.

Match R & D with local geography and opportunities this offers.

Match finance with innovative ideas.

Align business with appropriate use of by products.

Up skilling local people for key local products that will be needed.

Ensure regulatory processes that support sustainability.

Projects in the next 12 months

1.    Develop a robust system to enable sustainable energy for houses /businesses.-  need costing, bulk buying options, finance systems to subsidize and enable slow payback, energy companies that pay for the energy fed into the grid.

2.    Enhance communication among the existing groups and people involved in sustainable business e.g. forums for sharing information, encourage letters to the paper, lobbying of politicians, developing and utilising key connectors or people who spread the word, note Aspire 98 meeting 25 th Sept organised by the Chamber of Commerce, encourage groups to have open meetings on these topics.

3.    Develop a coordinated plan around a sustainable business path. Build on the EDA work.

4.    Print a series of posters on Transition Towns that serve as talking points in offices etc.
