What is a Transition Town -- Island, Suburb, Community, Region?
Transition Town initiatives are bringing people together out of a desire to explore how we - and our communities - can respond to the twin challenges of climate change and peak oil. We know we don’t have all the answers but we believe we have the innovation to create those solutions.
Each transition group networks with their local community on a coordinated range of projects designed to transition from high energy to low energy lifestyles in a positive and creative manner. Our aim is to re-localise our communities, making them vibrant, resilient and truly sustainable.
A substantial number of towns (Islands, Suburbs, Communities, Regions) are working on peak oil and climate change education, and localisation initiatives in New Zealand.

To all Transition Towns/Communities
Submitted by Daring Donna on 3 December 2008 - 3:33pm"My heart was new when I came out of the wilderness". . .
I am personally calling all hearts in the NZ Transition Towns movement to come out of the wilderness and "give with great love".
James Samuel is serving NZ transition towns up and down this beautiful country daily. He is available to you and your "love in action" transition projects 24 hours a day and has spent over a year knitting the threads throughout the country. I feel some of why TT has grown so quickly and with so much vigor is because of the dedication, knowledge, skills, networking, speaking, media coverage, workshops, website, blog, and general support James has given it. No one asked James to take an official position as netweaver of TT NZ and because of the man many of us know he is, James has been able to serve from his heart and give with great love using his own resources including money.

The following letter (see below) went out last week to one person in each Transition initiative (for them to forward), so this may be the second time you are reading this invitation. Please think seriously about this opportunity. it is possible that you could recoup the cost of attending this event by holding trainings (a great service opportunity) and charging an appropriate fee.

Imagine if there was someone each region of New Zealand who had the benefit of this course and could assist and support their local Transition initiatives. What a difference that could make!

4 - day "Train the Trainers" workshop
with UK TT trainers Naresh and Sophy
Naresh Giangrande and Sophy Banks have been running "Training for Transition" workshops in Totnes and around the UK since 2007. They will be in NZ in January 2009 and have agreed to run a "Train the Trainers" workshop, to pass on skills that will help resource us to build a strong movement in NZ.Our hope is that people from around NZ will attend, and take those skills back to their regions to run transition training workshops in their local areas.

Atamai Village is the first human settlement designed specifically for the post-petroleum age and the uncertainties of climate change. Based on a permaculture design, approximately 100 Ha are being developed at the top of the South Island to provide a traditional village layout of clustered, privately owned housing, nearby food production areas, orchards, and a forest regeneration project. All homes will be passive solar designs, made largely from local materials, and be built to last centuries. The energy flows on the land from the sun, wind, rain and soil will be harnessed to enhance t

Submitted by James Samuel on 17 November 2008 - 8:32pmWith the recent addition of Transition Town Brooklyn to the list of towns Towns who have formalised their adoption of the model, the total is now up to seven - with the total list of Transition initiatives being over 40. Well done Brooklyn.
Formalising an initiative is not a particularly onerous task, and it does seem a useful way of focusing on and ensuring the criteria that give an initiative a strong base to move forward from, are in place.
