Welcome to the Food & Gardening Subgroup of Transition Town Brooklyn

Brooklyn orchard AA signThe Food & Gardening subgroup has established two ‘share-gardens’: this is where two Brooklyn residents who are no longer able to do much gardening have volunteered their gardens for other people to use.

A community orchard has been established in Harrison Street. The first stage was planted in August 2009 with stage two tree planting taking place in August 2010.

Brooklyn community orchard working bee, 19 June

Every second Sunday in winter, we are running working bees. At the working bees we'll be keeping the grass in check,  weeding, feeding plants and general maintenance of the orchard.

Please bring along tools that you've got.

Come along! It's fun plus you'll do a bit of hard work. We would welcome you for any time you would be able to spare.

Upcoming working bees after this one are on Sundays: 3, 17 and 31 July.

Grow your own feijoa workshop poster

Come along to a session by Peter and Rose from Sabzi Organics to learn all about growing your own feijoas in our region.

At the workshop you'll have a chance:

  • ask any question
  • taste different varieties of feijoa
  • buy organic feijoa.

It'll be an informal and fun session.

In a few years’ time, Brooklyn children walking home from school will be able to pick apples and pears from their own community orchard. The orchard, officially opened last weekend, runs along both sides of a public walkway from the end of Harrison Street down to McKinley Terrace.
